WISDOM FOR DATA & SYSTEMS

88 quotes from history’s great thinkers, with practical takeaways for the people who build and run data and systems.

What can a Roman emperor, a philosopher, a mathematician, and a computer scientist teach us about data and systems? This collection pairs timeless quotes with an interpretation, real-world applications, and key takeaways.

Sound familiar?

Every team has lived at least one of these

The report says it’s fine. But, the users say otherwise.

Nobody checked the system itself.

Only one person knows how it works, and they’re out today.

Knowledge is stuck in one place.

Something changed last week. Nobody can say what or why.

Changes weren’t tracked.

Everyone agreed on the plan. Months later, nothing shipped.

A great plan with no follow through

Why I Wrote "Wisdom for Data & Systems"

There’s something intriguing about coming across words written hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years ago and realizing their still applicable today.

Most of my work (career) has been around data, technology, and systems, I would read a quote about truth and immediately think about data quality (integrity). I’d come across an observation about measurement and somehow connect it to analytics. The original writers certainly weren’t thinking about databases, dashboards, or information systems, but the connection was there.

I began collecting these quotes (ideas), making notes, and thinking about them through the lens of my own experiences. Eventually, I ended up thinking “this is a book!”, and here it is.
